FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
About the routes
The routes are generally suited to all types of cars, motorbikes, and bicycles.
The routes are also suitable for vans and small campers (e.g. VW California). Larger vehicles might also be able to navigate most of the routes, but their size wasn’t taken into consideration during planning. Therefore, it must be expected that challenges will arise on the narrow and twisty roads.
The routes primarily consist of single-lane and two-lane country roads. Some routes include less well-maintained roads or (decent) gravel roads. If these are included it is usually because they are incredibly scenic and it would be a shame not to include them. It will be mentioned in the route description if gravel roads are included. Gravel roads are also clearly marked on the maps, and it will be clear to see how to avoid them.
You should note that I LOVE twisty roads. If you drive a vehicle that has trouble navigating such roads, you might find my routes frustrating. However, you can still find loads of inspiration in my books to plan your own routes and roadtrips.
I try to avoid the roads with the worst surface quality. Every route is rated for the quality of the road surface. A score of 3 out of 5 should be acceptable to most. Routes with a score of 1 or 2 out of 5 are best avoided with hardcore sportscars, sportsbikes, or delicate classic cars. Please keep in mind that road surfaces change over time, for better or worse. I take no responsibility for the condition of the roads after publication of my roadbooks.
Gravel roads are only included when they are exceptionally scenic and if they are in good condition. In most cases, they can be avoided with a slight detour. If any gravel roads are included in a route, this will be mentioned in the intro and clearly marked on the map.
In any case, you can rest assured that the majority of roads in my routes will be very enjoyable to drive (or ride) in most vehicles. Just adapt your speed to the circumstances, and enjoy your time on the road!
Most routes are made for people who love to be involved in the act of driving or riding. In general, the routes avoid the main roads. Therefore, they don’t offer efficient transport from one tourist attraction to another. In this situation, I can recommend the more mainstream road trip books from Eyewitness Travel and Lonely Planet.
That said, the 360 ROADBOOKS provide loads of valuable input for a more mainstream road trip. They provide a clear overview of sights, activities, hotels and restaurants in a given area, not to mention many beautiful pictures. The books can be used as a source of inspiration for all types of road trips and bike-packing journeys.
The primary criterion for deciding which areas to include in my roadbooks is enjoyment on the road.
It takes countless hours to research and photograph each route, so I focus on the areas with the highest potential for an unforgettable day on the road.
The same logic applies to the roads. An exceptionally engaging and beautiful road will be included, even if it requires a detour.
On the other hand, main roads with lots of traffic will only be included if they are exceptionally beautiful, or if there is no other suitable alternative.
I aim to include a variety of roads in each route. Some roads will be wide and with gently flowing corners, others will be narrow and twisty. Some roads run through dense forests, open fields, or along the water. Some roads can be taken at speed, others will require a slower pace.
It should be noted that the routes in my books reflect my personal opinions. I include the roads and areas that I believe are the most enjoyable. Not everyone will agree with my selection. You are very welcome to contact me if you feel that I have overlooked a certain area or road, so that I can (re-)consider them for future reprints or new editions.
The Points of Interest (POI) in my books are a partial list of things to see and do in a particular area. It is a personal selection based on what I think like-minded enthusiasts and their travel companions will enjoy. In general, I try to mention all major Points of Interest in the vicinity of the routes.
I intentionally leave out some (minor) POIs, so there is room for discovery. To me, discovering new and unexpected things is a key ingredient for every road trip.
You are very welcome to contact me if you feel that I have overlooked a certain POI, so that I can (re-)consider it for future reprints or new editions.
I try to limit the number of recommendations to 2-5 per route. After all, the main focus of my books are the routes. Including recommendations in every price range is outside the scope of my books. I am aware that many excellent hotels, campsites, restaurants, and cafés will not make it on my list.
Therefore, I limit my recommendations to interesting, well-reviewed, and memorable restautants and accomodations that will become part of an unforgettable roadtrip experience.
I visit at least some of the recommendations myself, but I also rely heavily on reviews from others. So, if you know of excellent places to stay or eat in the areas I am working on, please feel free to share these with me!
Because the recommended restaurants and accommodations are often exclusive, well-reviewed, and almost always popular, many of these places are on the higher end of the price scale and might require booking well in advance.
I highly recommend sites/apps like Tripadvisor, Hotels.com, Booking.com, and Google.com if you want an alternative to my recommendations. These sites/apps are great for finding places to stay and eat – also last-minute. I use them myself on almost every single trip.
If you are planning to spend the night in a van, camper, or tent, I recommend finding the best places to stay on the Park4Night app.
Navigating the routes
All roadbooks released from 2024 onwards come with GPX navigation files and direct links to Google Maps. You can access the download page by scanning the route’s QR code or by entering the direct link below the QR code. PS: Books released before 2024 (i.e. the first editions of 360 DANMARK and 360 NÜRBURG) only include GPX and KML navigation files – note that these do NOT work in Google, Waze or Apple Maps.
Navigation via Google Maps might be the most convenient option for many people. It is free of charge and provides turn-by-turn navigation. Due to waypoint limitations in Google Maps, most routes are divided into several parts. Just click the links on the download page to start navigating. Please keep in mind that the Google algorithm might change the route depending on the current traffic situation. Google might also suggest several alternative route options that are not part of the official 360 ROADBOOKS route.
For the most reliable routing, please use the GPX files. The GPX files will allow you to navigate the route in its entirety using apps made specifically for passionate motoring enthusiasts and road trippers. These apps often include additional functionality that is appreciated by people like us. Many of these apps require a paid subscription. You can also load GPX files into navigation devices from companies like Garmin and TomTom.
For more information and illustrated instructions for navigation with GPX files, please visit:
Roadbooks released from 2024 onwards come with direct links to Google Maps. Most routes are divided into several sections to stay within the waypoint limits imposed by Google. Download the Google Maps app to use these direct links. For the most reliable routing, additional functionality, and uninterrupted navigation, please use the GPX files. Most GPX navigation apps with turn-by-turn navigation require a PAID subscription. To load these GPX files correctly, you need a suitable navigation app that can handle complex routes with more than 25 waypoints.

It is a known issue that some phones / QR code scanners have trouble reading the QR codes. In this case, I recommend that you try scanning the codes at different distances and lighting conditions. If that doesn’t solve the problem, please download a different QR code scanner via your app store.
All QR codes have been tested on several telephones prior to publication, so I guarantee that they are functional at the time of the book’s release. Due to technical reasons, I cannot guarantee that the QR codes will work on your specific telephone.
If you cannot scan or do not want to scan the QR codes: manually enter the address below the QR code into the browser of your choice. You will be taken to the exact same location as when you scan the QR code.
Unfortunately, these popular navigation apps limit the number of waypoints that can be included in a route. Therefore, they cannot handle the complex routes in my roadbooks.
This is not a defect in the routes. On the contrary! The complexity of the routes is what ensure that you get to experience all the best roads, without getting directed onto boring roads, highways, or into busy cities. By simplifying my routes to suit the requirement of these apps, the routes will get distored and the experience will be a lot less enjoyable.
I recommend loading the routes into navigations apps that can handle this complexity. Up-to-date recommendations can be found on WWW.360ROADBOOKS.COM/GPX
Roadbooks released after 2023 include direct links to load the routes correctly in Google. The routes are divided into shorter sections where required.
